Registering children
Children under 16 need to be registered by their parent or guardian. This usually means filling in a separate form. You may also be asked to provide a form of ID to prove that you’re their parent or guardian, alongside a copy of your childs birth certificate.
If you have a personal child health record (red book) from the birth of your child, it will help to provide this.
Gillick Competence:
If a child under 16 is considered “Gillick competent” (meaning they have the maturity and understanding to make their own healthcare decisions), they can consent to their own treatment, and therefore register themselves, if however they are too young to make their own healthcare decisions then the Practice policy is that they are registered alongside a Parent/Guardian. As you can appreciate, if a referral of any kind needs to be made, any correspondence from the secondary services would need to be addressed to a responsible adult who would be arranging the suitable times and locations of further investigatory appointments.
